Just one day before the opening of the '2024 Cosmoprof North America Las Vegas' (July 23-25, local time), all the items to be displayed in the Korean Pavilion were stolen.
On the morning of the 23rd (Korean time), C&C News reported that a representative of a participating company said, "All the exhibition items sent to the Korean Pavilion have been stolen, so we're having a hard time." He was enroute from Haneda to Las Vegas when he received the news from an employee on site.
The logistics company in charge issued an emergency notice: "The exhibition items sent through our company were stolen after customs clearance while being transported to the exhibition hall. We need to discuss the urgent matter of sending additional items. We will be able to provide details on additional shipping by tomorrow morning, Korean time. Please prepare two boxes of additional items per company."
Kim Sung-soo, CEO of the exhibition agency COEX, explained, "The popularity of K-beauty seems to have made our exhibition items a target for theft. COEX is organizing the Korean Pavilion. The items were intercepted while being transported from LA to Las Vegas."
He added, "This is the first time something like this has happened, possibly because K-beauty is so popular. Thanks to the quick response from the logistics company, we plan to have the items delivered by the afternoon of the first day of the exhibition to ensure there are no issues with the consultations."
The '2024 Cosmoprof Las Vegas' marks its 21st year, with over 1,100 companies from around the world expected to participate. The main categories include skincare, hair, nails, packaging, and OEM/ODM. With a 60% increase in cosmetic exports to the U.S. this year, participating companies have put significant effort into consultations and meetings.
The Korean Pavilion is supported by Gangnam District Office, the Korea International Trade Association, the Korea Federation of SMEs, and Hwaseong City Hall, providing booths for cosmetics companies aiming to enter the U.S. market. In addition, individual companies have formed a joint Korean Pavilion.
Due to this sudden 'container theft incident,' there are concerns about disruptions to the schedules of the companies participating in the Korean Pavilion. With the 16-hour time difference between Korea and the U.S., if the organizers respond promptly and the exhibition items arrive by the afternoon of the opening day, the damage can be minimized.
